Samuel McDonnell, MHC Intern

A Note from Dr. Laura Wallace:

Welcome to Twin Lakes Counseling!
I'm so glad you are here.

I have been practicing marriage and family therapy for almost a decade and am truly passionate about the work I do. I have gathered a team of the best therapists around, and if you'll let us, we would love to explore how to use our expertise and your experience to make lasting and powerful change.

I look forward to hearing from you and seeing where our work together takes us!

Samuel McDonnell, MHC Intern

Pronouns: He/Him

Sam has always felt a natural inclination towards helping those around him. Fully experiencing those darkest moments in life, whether his own or those of his friends, highlighted to him the importance having a secure and encouraging space to process those experiences. In an effort to learn how to best provide this for others, Sam decided to get his Bachelor’s degree in
Psychology from Ave Maria University and is continuing his education as he pursues his
Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Palo Alto University.

Sam has worked with a wide range of clients with different backgrounds, struggles, and goals,
while also having gained much experience with memory care patients, young adults struggling
with substance abuse, adolescents, and children. He also has a passion for those navigating
Autism, mood disorders such as major depressive disorder, personality disorders, and
obsessive-compulsive disorder. As Sam journeys with his clients towards finding deeper
meanings and greater understanding of life’s many moments, some techniques Sam has found
to be most helpful include dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), applied behavior analysis (ABA),
and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). He also appreciates gestalt therapy which supports his
humanistic, holistic, and person-centered form of therapy.

With Sam you will experience an empathetic and grounded therapist who seeks first to listen
and understand. He firmly believes in the importance of meeting his clients exactly where they
are at in order to help them navigate whatever it is they feel is holding them back. Sam focuses
on creating a calm, welcoming, and accepting environment for his clients to encourage and
cultivate trust, authenticity, and healing. While Sam honors and respects the complexity and
pain surrounding what brings his clients in to see him, Sam also has a humorous personality. He
has found humor helpful in providing some moments of relief, building rapport, and keeping
some balance and perspective as he gets to know his clients as whole people with lives that
contain both joy and sadness.

The stigma surrounding mental health and seeing a therapist is something Sam is constantly
trying to address. He is passionate about speaking against that stigma, making mental health
services accessible to as many people as possible, and advocating for those who are often left
unrecognized, unconsidered, and forgotten. Sam is also passionate about learning as much as
he can in this field, expanding on his expertise, and conducting more research to be used to
benefit as many people as possible. However, one of Sam’s favorite aspects of this career field
is being able to help someone feel less alone in this world and provide the space and security
needed to fully process destructive behaviors, painful experiences, and develop greater
understanding and freedom from doing so.
