Talia Kuykendall, LMHC

MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELOR
Pronouns: She/Her

Talia has had a life-long passion for counseling influenced by her grandma who also lived a committed life to helping others achieve their goals through therapy. Talia began studying psychology in high school and loved what she was learning. Eager to develop her understanding of psychology and how it can be applied to help others, she went on to achieve her bachelor’s in psychology from the University of Washington, a Human Services Certification from Tacoma Community College, and a master’s in clinical Mental Health Counseling from Antioch University.

While working on her education, Talia volunteered for various human services-based community organizations to gain as much perspective and context as possible to what she was studying. Since then, she has worked in a variety of mental health settings and officially began her career in 2011 providing chemical dependency treatment to her community.

Talia approaches therapy from the perspective that the client is the expert on their own life while she is there to offer guidance through the journey of life. She believes that imbalances within our lives are often the underlying causes to whatever challenges and dysfunctions we experience. These challenges and dysfunctions often have profound and negative impacts on various areas within our lives and are often the underlying concern no matter what challenge presents itself on the surface. Therefore, Talia prefers to discover and address these underlying imbalances in her client’s life using a variety of approaches as suited to each client in order to provide the best and most effective individualized care.

Talia provides counseling to all communities and specializes in non-monogamous relationships, individuals who have participated in the erotic trade industry, and the kink and queer communities. She also specializes in working with substance use disorders, relationship dynamics and patterns related to alternative relationships, anxiety, depression, trauma, and ADHD. Some of Talia’s most frequented therapeutic approaches come from methods such as client-centered, psycho education, strengths based, narrative therapy, family systems, CBT, somatic, mindfulness, and trauma informed care.

No matter who she is sharing space with or what therapeutic technique she is applying, one of Talia’s goals is to combat the stigmas impacting marginalized communities through access to mental health resources. She believes these stigmas create barriers to treatment, contribute to a lack of culturally competent resources, infringe upon a person’s bodily autonomy, and contribute to discriminatory incidents.

Talia's clients find in her a welcoming and refreshing presence. She is outgoing and passionate about counseling which adds to her clients' ability to find confidence in her guidance. With Talia you will find a space free from judgement where you can feel encouraged and safe to share your experiences of life, it's hardships and failings, while finding an incredibly knowledgeable, warm, and trustworthy guide along the way.
