CLINICAL INTERN
Pronouns: She/Her
Maggie has always had an interest in helping where she is most needed and became a support escort at a reproductive clinic in western Washington for nearly seven years. In this position she accompanied individuals as a compassionate support system during difficult times. During this process Maggie learned how important it was for people to have a safe person around during stressful life events which prompted Maggie to obtain her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Central Washington University. After completing her bachelor’s degree, Maggie attended Seattle University’s Mental Health Counseling graduate program in the College of Education, due to its focus on social and restorative justice, equity, and inclusion. Similarly, Maggie sought out an internship at Twin Lakes Counseling because of its focus on accessibility and collaboration.
Safety is a core goal for Maggie’s practice. Maggie encourages and welcomes discussions around her identities and culture as she prioritizes a humanistic approach above all. Power differences can exist in therapy, and Maggie’s goal is to reduce those as much as possible so that the client and counselor may be on as equal footing as possible. Maggie has a wide array of life experience from pursuing many different passions that have exposed her to different life perspectives. Maggie enjoys working with people from all walks of life who need a safe, validating, and open environment to work through whatever life may throw at them. Maggie works to maintain an open-minded, multiculturally oriented, and social justice focused alliance with her clients so that therapeutic changes can be made with autonomy, respect, and the client at the core of the work.
Maggie’s counseling style is collaborative, person-centered, genuine, and relaxed. Maggie believes that individuals know their own lives, struggles, strengths, and challenges best, and she encourages her clients to share their experiences and thoughts so that they may move forward together toward their goals. In each session Maggie wishes to convey that she welcomes the differences in all individuals that make them unique including the aspect of self that is currently seeking therapeutic help. Drawing on modalities such as emotion-focused therapy, relational-cultural therapy, narrative therapy and rational-emotive behavior therapy, Maggie works with clients to help them grow in the direction of their choosing, deciding their own path forward. In sessions, Maggie holds space for an environment where honesty and openness are fostered, and her clients feel comfortable coming as they are. As much as she works through life’s challenges with her clients, Maggie also loves to help them find what brings them joy and happiness, both within themselves and within their community. When not working as a mental health counseling intern or finishing up her third year Master’s program at Seattle University, Maggie can be found crocheting while watching British television, traveling with her husband, snorkeling, and trying new and interesting foods.
