You embody a unique blend of cultural identities—encompassing race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, family experiences, faith affiliations, and beyond. Your life is intricately woven from historical, cultural, and familial threads that have shaped your personal narrative.
My grounding in systemic therapy, enriched by my upbringing in the culturally diverse Hawaiian Islands, provides me with nuanced insight into the complex interconnections of life's various elements. In the spirit of 'Resurfacing,' my role is to truly see and hear you, affirming your authentic self. Together, we embark on a transformative journey of self-expression, storytelling, reclaiming strengths, and fostering mindfulness and emotional stability.
MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPIST
Pronouns: She/Her
Angelica Paulo Friedmann is a BIPOC Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate. She understands the struggles of feeling isolated, underrepresented, and misunderstood due to historical oppression. Considering the culture and values each client identifies with, Angelica integrates several forms of psychotherapy that adapt to each person’s unique needs depending on their challenges, goals, expectations, and motivation. At the heart of her therapeutic practice lies the principle of 'Resurfacing,' a deep-dive into rediscovering and embracing the submerged aspects of one’s identity. This approach guides clients on a journey to rediscover and reconnect with their true selves, enabling them to reimagine their potential and renew their life's narrative.
In every session, Angelica fosters a nurturing environment that encourages and empowers individuals to explore their experiences thoroughly, addressing challenges while also celebrating and celebrating the strengths and facets of their identities that might have been overshadowed or neglected. She values working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and is particularly drawn to helping those facing challenges related to anxiety, life transitions, trauma, and stress. Angelica also has a strong dedication to supporting neurodiverse clients and those grappling with issues of identity and cultural intersection. She works with clients (individuals, couples, families, groups) anywhere on the spectrums of age, gender/sexuality, (non)religion, ability, and cultural and racial identity.
Holding a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa and a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Capella University, Angelica has developed a detailed understanding of the dynamics of mental health and family systems. With nearly two decades of experience, she has honed her skills in advancing emotional literacy and mental health counseling. Her qualifications include being an Emotional Literacy Coach, a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist, a practitioner of Ho’oponopono, Coming of Age Mentor for Youth, Positive Parenting Coach, and a Crisis Counselor for the Trevor Project, each enriching her ability to address a wide range of emotional and relational issues. Through her experience as a grief recovery specialist, she has come to understand that grief, often beyond the scope of bereavement, frequently underpins the challenges that bring people to therapy, impacting various aspects of emotional and mental health.
Through a fusion of Emotionally Focused and Solution-Focused Therapy, alongside Family Systems practices, Angelica’s approach is individualized, supporting the uniqueness of each complex system. In her sessions, feelings and experiences are heard and fully validated, setting the stage for a meaningful 'Resurfacing'—a journey of rediscovery and empowerment. Whether navigating emotional challenges, seeking to transform negative thought patterns, or searching for effective coping strategies for daily stressors, Angelica's approach is tailored and responsive to each client's unique needs. Together, they cultivate a journey of discovery and evolution, where clients not only confront and manage their challenges but also thrive by uncovering and embracing the intrinsic, often untapped strengths of their identities. This process, grounded in personal commitment and effort, empowers clients to live more authentically and fully.
