Alexi Atkinson, LMHCA

Mental Health Counselor
Pronouns: She/Her

Alexi understands the impact that having an emotionally safe and empathetic therapeutic space can have on self-exploration and healing. She appreciates the courage it takes to self-examine, notice patterns, and seek change. While Alexi can recall feeling curious about the internal human experience from a young age, her journey to becoming a therapist was nonlinear. Spending most of her life in Maryland, Alexi initially pursued a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Baltimore. During the nearly ten years she spent working in human resources, she found herself continually drawn to the people part of her jobs. She enjoyed helping employees identify sustainable career paths, resolve workplace problems, and embrace natural strengths. Throughout these experiences and many more, Alexi came to identify her passion for mental health counseling. Alexi holds a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Antioch University with a specialization in trauma-informed care. Today, she is grateful to feel genuinely engaged in and fulfilled by her work.

Alexi approaches counseling from a nonjudgmental stance and works to gently yet directly weave individualized interventions into sessions. She believes in her clients' inner wisdom and supports them in doing the same. She walks alongside her clients with compassion and deep respect for their vulnerability. Her work is grounded in the truth that her clients are already whole and already enough. She knows that sometimes, experiences in the past or present can leave people feeling unworthy, lost, or stuck. Alexi works from the idea that the words a person says to themselves - about themselves - have a profound effect on the way they move through these experiences. Alexi supports her clients in shifting this narrative to enable them to move forward.

Alexi's work can be described as feminist, compassion-focused, experiential, and attachment-based. She offers both practical support and depth to build insight that empowers clients to make the changes they're seeking. Alexi works with a variety of presenting concerns including anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, burnout, relationship stress, women’s issues, and life transitions. Alexi integrates prior training in yoga and mindfulness into her therapeutic approach. She holds a 200-hour yoga teacher certification and uses this knowledge to help clients anchor to the present by drawing attention to the wisdom of the body. This can be experienced through meditation, breathwork, and grounding exercises. Alexi has also attended trainings in Internal Family Systems (IFS/parts work) and embodied approaches like Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) and expressive arts. She is honored to be a part of each client's journey and hopes to leave them with a greater capacity for self-compassion, authenticity, and the freedom to embrace a life that feels good on the inside.
